Sharon Taylor was delighted to greet Mr Miliband to Stevenage and give him a tour of the fantastic Business Technology Center.

While in Stevenage Ed launched the final report of the local government innovation taskforce, of which I was co-author.

If elected, the change would mean – among other things – that local authorities take over £1.5bn of further education funding for young people, while health and social care would be integrated locally. This would make a fantastic difference.

I took Mr Miliband to our wonderful Business & Technology Center to meet with some of their aspiring innovators and entrepreneurs.

Thank you to everyone at the Business & Technology Centre (btc) and Charity Checkout for always giving us warm welcomes!

Tory-Led Government cutting train service to Stevenage by nearly 50% - and today sees a rail fare increase of 2.8%

We were at the train station bright and early on Tuesday morning with our friends from the GMB Union campaigning at Stevenage Rail Station about these potential service cuts.

The government have contracts with private rail companies and one of these contracts, the East Coast contract, currently states that East Coast Trains are required to stop in Stevenage a MINIMUM of 30 times on a weekday.

The government have decided to cut down this contract, stating East Coast trains need only stop 16 times in Stevenage.

Stevenage is the only station on the East Coast Main Line between London and Edinburgh that has seen such a significant cut to it’s required services.

This is NOT acceptable, and Stevenage Labour Party are dedicated to campaigning on this issue to ensure that as many people as possible are made aware of the looming cuts.

Shadow transport secretary Mary Creagh said to BBC news “David Cameron's cost-of-living crisis continues as fares rise this week by up to 5%, while season tickets have gone up by 20% under this government, costing hard-working commuters hundreds of pounds”

With prices rising we deserve good service – we don’t want these train services being halved, and we need a government that can stand up for Stevenage.

This is a real blow to Stevenage's many rail users, who already pay over the odds for their tickets compared to commuters on other train lines.  It shows just how out of touch this Government is with the needs of those who rely on train travel to get to work and visit friends and family - Sharon Taylor

Sharon Taylor's Open Letter to Tory MP asking him to vote against rip-off Letting Agent Fees

Dear Stephen,

Nine million people are living in rented homes today, more than a million families, and more than two million children. With tenants in Stevenage facing rip-off fees from lettings agents and insecure tenancies, Labour has announced the biggest change in a generation to make the system fairer for renters.

On Tuesday, MPs of all political parties will have the chance to implement an important part of this plan - banning letting agent fees to tenants.

Tenants are hit by huge upfront costs through unfair letting agent fees. A survey of letting agents found that 94 per cent imposed additional charges on tenants on top of the deposit and rent in advance. Fees are extremely variable, but on average tenants are forced to pay £355 to their lettings agents every time they move house with some paying as much as £500. These costs are putting addition pressure on renters with 54 per cent of people surveyed saying they faced financial difficulties covering fees.

The amendment to the Consumer Rights Bill, to be voted on this Tuesday, will give all MPs the chance to stand with renters and make a real difference to their lives by banning letting fees to tenants.

I'm writing to call on you to support the amendment. The next Labour government will pass legislation to ban letting agent fees for tenants and to introduce longer-term tenancies with predictable rents. But on Tuesday all MPs will have a chance to stand for the nine million people who rent. If you fail to vote for the amendment, all those who rent in Stevenage will be entitled to ask why you won't stand up for them.

In light of the public interest in this matter I am releasing a copy of this letter to the press.

Yours sincerely
